James Mallahan Cain (1892-1997) was an American journalist and novelist known best for Mildred Pierce, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Double Indemnity. That last, a novella first published as a serial by Liberty magazine in 1936, from which the following passage will be taken, is an excellent crime fiction. The leads, Walter Huff the insurance salesman and Phyllis Nirdlinger the housewife, have planned to kill her husband, make his death appear an accident, and take his life insurance payout at the doubled rate referred to by the title.
